PhD in Literary, Cultural, and Linguistic Studies

AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI

French and Francophone Studies in an interdisciplinary and trans-cultural context

The Ph.D. in Literary, Cultural, and Linguistic Studies offers two major concentrations:

Literary and Cultural Studies

and

Critical Studies of Language/Linguistics.

Students in each concentration may opt to develop a secondary field of expertise in the other. A variety of geographic, temporal, and theoretical concentrations allow students to carry out innovative and interdisciplinary research projects, often with a transnational focus.

While developing professional competency in their major research fields through an intensive curriculum in French and Francophone Studies, students may also combine the latter with  Africana Studies, Arabic Studies, Brazilian Studies, Caribbean Studies,  German Studies, Iberian Studies, Italian Studies, Latin American Studies, and combinations thereof.

The program’s strong theoretical component grounds student research in a range of areas, including: aesthetics, bilingualism, early modern studies, film studies, gender studies, (im)migration studies, indigenous studies, performance studies, postcolonial studies, queer studies, subaltern studies, sociolinguistics, theatre studies, and women’s studies.

Students are required to develop competency in a cognate field related to their intellectual pursuits, leading to the dissertation topic. Recent examples of cognate specialization include anthropology, communication studies, film studies, history, philosophy, musicology, and sociology.

The department also offers two graduate certificates to prepare students beyond their specialization, which may be fulfilled with course electives:

•  Graduate Certificate in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching

•  Early Modern Studies Concentration, an interdisciplinary c ertificate offerered in conjunction with English and History

Research Environment
The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures sponsors lectures, workshops, and conferences each year to bring leading national and international scholars to campus. Graduate students collaborate with faculty on these endeavors and host their own annual conference yearly. Recent conference themes include: Outrage Around the World; Cyberaesthetics and Narrative; War and Conflict; Spaces of Relation; Poetics and Politics of Love; and Translation and Transitions.

In addition to regular Departmental events, students and faculty participate in the initiatives of the Center for the Humanities, the Center for Latin American Studies, and the Programs in Africana Studies, American Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies. Graduate students have been highly successful in securing competitive funding from these entities, as well as from the Department, to support travel, research, and writing.
