Les pays du Moyen-Orient et du Maghreb connaissent une multiplication des conflits depuis le début du 21ième siècle - pensons notamment à la guerre contre le terrorisme islamique lancée par George W. Bush en 2001, et à la guerre d’Irak qui s’en est suivi; à la guerre des 33 jours au Liban (2006); aux contestations du printemps arabe déclenchées en 2010, qui ont mené à des renversements de régime en Tunisie, en Égypte, en Libye et qui ont conduit à la guerre toujours en cours en Syrie. Le désenchantement lié à l’impossibilité de se projeter dans le futur dans un contexte de guerre ou d’instabilité politique génère une forme d’anesthésie temporelle, laquelle peut affaiblir la potentialité de l’imagination. Aux prises avec une contemporanéité rendue précaire, nombre d’artistes du Moyen-Orient et du Maghreb, certains en exil, ont pris en charge ce « vide » pour faire exister différentes manières d'explorer de nouveaux possibles par les voies de la fiction (fiction documentaire, narration spéculative, science-fiction, etc.) à travers différents médiums. Cette séance invite les chercheur.e.s à réfléchir, à partir d’études de cas, aux diverses stratégies et formes développées par les artistes de ces régions pour induire des bonds de l’imagination qui permettent d’envisager des horizons de futurité renouvelés à même un présent fragilisé. En quoi ces propositions favorisent-elles une pensée anticipante et une sortie de l’impuissance? Quels types d’imagination du futur suggèrent-elles?
The imagination of the future by artists from Middle East and North Africa
The Middle East and North Africa have experienced a proliferation of conflicts since the turn of the 21st century – think no further than the war on Islamic terrorism instigated by George W. Bush in 2001 or the subsequent Irak War; the July War in Lebanon (2006); the Arab Spring uprisings of 2010 which led to the toppling of regimes in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, as well as to the ongoing war in Syria. The disenchantment that springs from the failure to imagine a future in times of war and instability engenders a form of temporal anaesthesia, itself devitalizing to the imagination’s potentiality. Grappling with a now precarious contemporaneity, many artists from the Middle East and North Africa, some exiled, have tackled this “void” by calling into being various approaches to discovering new possibilities through fiction (documentary fiction, speculative narration, science fiction, etc.) in various media. This session invites researchers to use case studies to reflect upon the varied strategies and forms fostered by artists in these regions that activate the imagination towards a consideration of horizons of renewed futurity from the brink of a depressed present. How do these ideas favour anticipatory thought and an outlet from impotence? What kinds of imaginings of the future do they propose?

Les membres comme les non-membres de l’AAUC peuvent soumettre une proposition. Ceux qui ne sont pas membres doivent néanmoins le devenir et payer les frais d’inscription afin de participer au congrès. Tous les membres doivent renouveler leur adhésion et s’inscrire au congrès avant le 15 septembre, 2017.
Le congrès est ouvert aux enseignants postsecondaires dans tous les champs des arts visuels, tels que l’histoire de l’art, la culture visuelle, la culture matérielle, la conservation et la muséologie, la recherche/création, etc., ainsi qu’aux chercheurs indépendants œuvrant dans ces champs.

Submissions must include: the name and email address of the applicant; the applicant’s institutional affiliation and rank; the paper title; an abstract (300 words maximum); and a brief bio (150 words maximum).
Proposals may be submitted by current members or non-members of UAAC. Non-members MUST become members of UAAC and pay registration fees in order to present a paper at the conference. Membership dues and registration fees must be received by September 15, 2017.
The conference is open to post-secondary faculty in all fields of the visual arts (art history, visual culture, material culture, museum studies, art conservation, etc.), visual artists, practitioner/researchers, as well as independent scholars in such fields.
